My son put a 351W compcam (pn 35-560-
in to a 1990 EFI 5.0. From what I've researched, switching the wires will not be enough, he will need to use a different ECU(ECM). Can I get some confirmation on this, suggestions, and if a new ECM is required, a vendor recommendation.

Thanks.

The cam won't work due to the extreme valve lift(.565"/.580" ) , not an EFI compatibility problem.

5.0 HO's and 351W have same firing order....no problem there, no need to change ECM...need the right valve springs and config to support those lift numbers though.

Check the clearances and flycut if necessary. Its not the lift thats usually the problem its the duration and timing of the events. (how fast you open the valves)

A 5.0 high out put does not have the same firing order as a windor block like a 351 w or a non ho 5.0. You can swap the cams from a ho into a non ho but the block needs to be machined.

5.0 HO = 351W firing order = 13726548
289/Non-HO 5.0 firing order = 15426378
....they're all Windsor style blocks(289/302/5.0L/351w)

Cams (roller, flat tappets) are interchangeable between all windors block styles, need to get the right lifters though...if you install a roller cam in a non-roller block, have to get the early block hyd. roller lifter type, which don't require any machining of the block.

351W and 5.0 HO ARE indeed the same firing order. When Ford began putting some life back into the 302 in about 1982, the best cam they had was the 351W marine cam so this went into the first 5.0 HO engines and they've used the 351 W firing order ever since. If you're running the EEC IV efi system, make sure the cam is computer compatible. Computer controlled systems don't like a lot of duration and overlap, even on mass air systems. Call Comp to get their recommendations.
