my engine (93 5.0l H.O.) began knocking about five days ago. there is a steady knock at idle which seems to be coming from the upper passenger side of the engine. the knock gets increasingly louder when in gear while accelerating, but when i reach steady throttle, the noise does not seem to be there.

there does not seem to be any appreciable loss of power, no burning oil, nor does the engine experience any missing.

any ideas? i've pursed a few options, but i want to hear suggestions first.

I would try removing your serpentine belt and starting up the engine and see if the noise goes away. This will eliminate all of your accesories.Maybe you'll be lucky and it will just be something simple.OOPs just seen your script that its in a 65 mustang so this might not apply.I was thinking it was a late model mustang with all the accesories on the front of the motor.

i've eliminated the accessories as i have already removed the belt.

i have also removed the possibility of the lifters.

for some reason i am not thinking this will be easy...

Pull the plug wires one at a time on the side that's making the noise. If the knock goes away when you pull a plug wire off it's most likely a rod bearing.
