Does anyone have an opinion on the best sounding exhaust diameter for my 289. It has right around 300hp but 9:1 compression. I have hooker super comp short headers and Flowmaster 2 chamber 40 series. I need new exhaust (prematurly do to poor job) so I know what is sounds like with manifolds 2 1/2" and those mufflers but I have a feeling that it may sound better with 2 1/4" It sounds great but idles kind of quiet. Thanks Dustin

I used 2 chamber 40 series on a 67' mustang w/ 3" collectors. Exhaust plumbing was 2.5" and sounded good. Yes, the idle is a little quiet, but if you are going to replace the exhaust anyhow, try having the exhaust exit in front of the rear tires if you want a more aggresive sound. (less pipe, and different orientation). If you really wish for an louder exhaust go for 3 disc inserts which slide into your collectors and ditch the flowmasters. This will give you an open exhaust tone, but are illegal in many areas. Summit Racing sells them. Laters!
