I just got my relatively new T-5 out, and was inspecting it. I have play in the input shaft, the same side to side as up and down. It seems pretty loose to me, what kind of play is normal (if any) in the input shaft of a T-5.

as a generally rule of thumb, all manual trannies will have play on the input shaft since they do not have a bushing in the end of the throwout bearing collar. The only thing supporting the input shaft is the front bearing until the tranny is installed and the shaft is also supported by the pilot bearing.

You have probably fooled with auto trannies some and noticed the input shaft has no play and they have a bushing at the end where the pump slides into the convertor.
