I want to double check something, from my knowledge of what a ford 9" rear end looks like it has no axle cover at the back like other rear ends but the third member or pumpkin section is bolted in at the frt and contains the bolts all around the carrier where it mounts to the housing. Is this correct? Are there other ford rear end assemblies that are the same or similiar to what a 9" looks like but is not a ford 9" rear end?

Reason I'm asking is I've come across a 1979 Ford Granada with the 6 cyl. but has a Ford 9" rear end at the back (or what I think is a ford 9&quot
. Like I described earlier there is no axle cover at the back of the housing when I looked underneath and I'm trying to confirm that it has a 9" in the car.

I'm amazed at the fact that this vehicle may have a 9" rear end in it but with a 6 cyl. engine. Even my parts car (77) with a 351W and pan filled C4 doesn't have a 9" ford rear end in it. I'm trying to get the 79 car too for parts (want the axle assy. if it is a 9&quot
for project sleeper. Need to know soon as I'm going to see about getting the car tomorrow (it is at a used car lot here in Toronto, guy wants $500 bucks for it but I'm trying to get it for less, a lot less). TIA.

"It is possible that you have a 9". I have seen stranger things from Ford. Most likely you have an 8" rear though. At first glance it looks like a 9", but there are some differences and it's not as strong.

The sure way to tell if it's a 9": On the front side of the housing is a ring of studs w nuts that hold the cast iron center section to the housing. Try to put a socket on the bottom two nuts. If it fits, you have an 8" rear. If you can't get a socket on it (you would need a wrench instead) it's a 9". It's like that becaus the pinion support area is larger on the 9". The larger area hangs down and it in the way of getting a straight shot at the nuts.

If it has disc brakes, it's a 9". If not it's an 8". Also beware of late 60's & early 70's full-size cars. They look like a 9", have the same housing & axles, but are a 9 3/8"

thanks for the info guys. It will still make it tough to spot the differences between a 9" and the other axles from the info provided.

I looked at the car last weekend and tried to lowball the guy for it (offered him $150 for the car) but he just walked away from me, didn't even want to talk. There's no way that car's worth 500 bucks and he probably didn't even pay anything for it when it was traded in. I did find out that he's had it on the lot for about 2 months so I'm wondering why he's even holding on to it for this long. I'm planning to go there again tomorrow with a friend who's going to try to deal him down for me.

I know this car doesn't have disc brakes and there's no way I can look at the tags since it's sitting quite low on the ground (almost like a lowrider) so it's hard to get a good look at the axle. The possibility of it having an 8" axle would suck cause I don't need this car if it doesn't have a 9" in it.

From the info provided, it seems to me that the 8" axle with the bolt-on carrier similiar to the 9" was avail. only on late 60's earlier 70's cars, is this right? If that's the case then this car would have a 9" underneath it. The 8" axles I'm familiar with is like a conventional axle with an axle cover on the back (both the parts car I have now and project sleeper have this axle assy.)

Can anyone confirm the answer to the question in the last paragraph? thanks.

Got an '80 Pinto I'm junking, 3:55 gear 8". Granada is a 8" Lincoln Versailles was the only car in that body style with a 9"

thanks for answering my question. Like I said earlier the 79 car is useless to me if it didn't have a 9" rear in it. guess I'll keep hunting around for the 9" axle. thanks again.

could be 8" or 9". easiest foolproof way to tell is look at the lower bolts that hold the third member to the housing, the 8" you can get a socket on them, and the 9" the third member "hangs" over the 2 lower bolts and you have to use a wrench on them.
