I currently own a 1974 F-100 w/390 & c6 tranny w/shift kit.
I m going throught the motor now to eef it up a little bit. It wont be a daily driver, rather a budget toy at I use now and gain to haul few things. The horsepower wont be enormous, but am shooting for decent performance. Which is better for my goals here. I hear the C6 is bullet proof and take anything, but it is heavier. On the other hand the C4 is lighter duty, but can handle a decent amount of power, and again it is lighter. Any guidance will be greatly appreciated!

PS.

Are these two comparible with the Chevy 700 & 400?

I'd personally recommend leaving the C6 behind the 390. While a built C4 will be significantly strong, the C6 is pretty stout as well.

I'd stay C-6 as well. You've got a beefy truck there, the minor weight savings versus the strength of the C6 just doesnt justify it IMHO. If you were building a 700 horse 460, and making most of the body fiberglass, then the C-4 would be worth it
