Please refer to this diagram first: http://www.drivetrain.com/ford9.html#Ford%209

My question has to do with the location of the thrust washer (#19) in the assembly.
In the open carriers and in the posi the thrust washer goes next to the axle gear(#10) except for the axle gear #11. The assembly pic shows gear (#11), hub (#12), washer (#19).

In assembly on the bench it looks like a 'better' arrangement is #11 gear, #19 washer, #12 hub.
It looks like the hub will float on the clutches and doesn't need the thrust washer. And it looks like the gear needs the thrust washer under it.

You're right. It goes between 11 and 12, just as the other side does.

Just received a note from someone else that the washer goes where the drawing shows since the gear and hub are splined to each other. The washer won't do any good since the units are not 'rubbing'.
Comments were also made about pre-load and clutch wear requires the washer on the outside of the hub.
