Hi all, im after some advice regarding a clevo swap into a 1982 GT Body. I havent bought the car yet..... just weighing up all my options.

Ive searched thru the forums, kinda got information overload and confused as all heck.

Im in New Zealand, where there arent a lot of these bodies, so spare parts are hard to come by.

Main questions are....
- Is it a reasonably simple swap to put my worked 351C into the engine bay, where a 302 HO currently resides? Im assuming ill require a rear sump oil pan(which i already have) and i can build headers if need be.
- Will my C4 fit where the SROD Manual is?

I dont have any issues with modifying the car to suit - but just prefer to be forewarned of any issues.

Years back we put a 351C into a 80 Cougar. Its a Fox body platform, at the time I made the oil pan out of the original 351C pan rails and a double sump bottom welded together. They make these pans now and its no longer needed to make one. The headers were custom made as well, and the engine was hooked to a C6. It was a pretty simple deal really but now it will be even easier as the equipment is out there to do it already.

The 351C will bolt onto the 302 motor mounts but you will probably have to space the engine up about 1/2" or so to clear the steering rack. The oil pan must be a rear sump pan specifically for a Foxbody car. I built my last one from a 4x4 truck oil pan for a 351m/400. Oil pans can be bought as can headers. You will need a double hump cross member to clear dual exhaust. To install a factory double hump cross member into your 82 will require you to modify the cross member brackets on the subframe. The brackets must be moved further apart to accomadate the wider cross member. Ford Racing still sells the factory double hump cross member and I believe it includes details about this modification. You will probably have to cut a hole in the hood to clear the carb as the engine will sit higher. This depends on the intake that is used. I recently installed a 351C and a C4 in my 93 Mustang. It isn't all that complicated to do. Hope this helps. If I can think of anything else I will post it.

I thought of one more thing. I would consider using an electric fan. With the engine sitting higher a mechanical fan sticks up kind of high making it difficult to put a proper shroud on it. Not a big deal but something to consider.

I did buy the car and for the moment im leaving the 302HO motor in there, until i blow it or the gearbox LOL.

So far Ive replaced the power steering rack with a new manual rack and welded in subframe connectors.

Looking forward to fitting the cleveland, but for now the 302 is quite peppy and fun.

Cool! Since it is drivable you might as well enjoy it while you collect parts and get ready to install the Cleveland. Good luck with the project.

If you put in an electric fan get on eout of a Lincoln Mark VIII. It is a tight fit but it can be done. I also added a Dekota Digital fan controller. That fan will require about a 50AMP fuse on it's supply line. Enjoy your 5.0!

I use a Mark VIII fan in my 93 Mustang. It is tight fit with the Cleveland but it fits. I use a 70 amp relay with a temp sender in the block. I tried one of the temp senders that go into the radiator core but that wasn't consistant in how it cycled the fan so I switched to a sender that goes into a coolant passage. It works much better. I picked up the Mark VIII fan at the Ford show in Carlisle PA for $60 a couple years ago. It is a one speed version. They definitely flow plenty of air and they fit my aftermarket aluminum radiator great.
