hi all, im currently fitting a 5.0 to my mustang and i`m using 96 explorer fuel rails, with the rear inlet and outlet, for safetys sake I want to copy, as closely as i can, the method used in the explorer for running from the fuel rail, to the chassis mounted steel lines, so i`m looking for diagrams and photos of the routing, where and how it crosses through, attaches to the body etc.. now, clearly the mustang is going to be different structurally, but it should give me a good idea how to go about it.

my main concern being that the line runs over the top of the headersand if i get a leak anywhere on that section, i also get a fireball thrown in for good measure.

so if anyone has pics of their fuel line routing at the engine side, or can point me to diagrams, it would be much appreciated

Mark, the generic plan used with all of them is steel lines up the chassis rail, and a flex line somewhere between there and the fuel rail to allow for engine movement. So you can see the first photo is Explorer-style, where the chassis lines come all the way up by the brake booster, turn and go SS braid to the rails. This minimizes the use of the flexible hose. However, most Fords use more flex hose, and the factory hoses in the second pic go all the way from the chassis rail to the fuel rails. About 2-3 feet for most engines. I run up the firewall and over like the Explorer lines, whether steel or SS braid - both are fine. I have some pics of my 5.0T Ranger lines I'll dig up that show the same path if you like.

interesting, thanks..

i notice that the connectors there are the female ones, they dont connect straight to the rails do they? the rails i have, have female connectors themselves.

i suspect those crimps arent something I can do at home either..

The ends are whichever you need to connect. In your case, you need the male O-ringed fittings on pressure hose, down to standard tube-adapter fittings like this or this (depending on diameter) on the hard line.

just digging up this thread..

PSIG, just wondering if you could dig up those ranger pics? Im running my lines now, and i cant decide whether to come up inside, or outside the engine bay to my explorer rails, my only concern running inside teh engine bay is the heat from the headers heating up the fuel.. is this an issue?

my only other option is thru the torque box like stock and up inside the wheel arch, but i dont fancy my high pressure fuel lines being bashed with rocks, so i thik i`ll avoid that one.

currently running cunifer pipe, seems highly recommended, might have a bash with some SS too when i can get it right!

Mark, I'll look for where I stashed photos. I just run straight-up from the chassis rail (I run lines inside rails when possible for protection), up next to the master cylinder, and turn toward the fuel rails. This is common stock routing in many vehicles, and better (in my opinion) than other rails that have to feed at the front of the engine. Just one reason I like the Explorer rails. If this is a hot spot in your car, either move the lines to a different path, or insulate them. While there is a constant flow of fuel circulating though the lines from the tank and back (unlike a carb), it's still not generally desirable to heat the fuel any more than necessary.

thanks mate..

one thing i`m curious about is the line from the rails (explorer/ranger type), which I dont have, from what i can search out on the internet they appear to run from the fuel rail inlet and outlet, along the top of the rocker cover to the front of the engine, then connect to another line there?

referring to my thoughts on my options, but i guess another option is to use that section too, and then run the lines outside the engine bay from the front, and along the stock 68 routing which seems to be the best for safety, and cool fuel.

How I ran the fuel lines to the Explorer fuel rail. Note the original lines are coupled at the bottom, and just run right up the firewall. The lines are resting and come-up a bit higher when secured, and the top line was cut shorter to give a few inches of flex line from the hard line to the factory rail connector.

Original lines ran against the chassis rail from the tank to the point you see at the bottom, where I spliced new hard lines. You can see the brake booster and steering column on the right, and tunnel on the left:
