I am building a 331 right now and it's time to get a new timing gear/chain. I was thinking about getting a timing gear instead. Anyone have advice on this? The noisy whine of the straight cut gear sounds kind of cool to me (no pun intended) and they say it is more accurate. Appreciate any input.

Gear drives transmit harmonics from the crank to the camshaft and will sometimes affect cam actuation. In some high rpm cases i have seen them crack a camshaft as well stick with the chain

Besides the fact that MOST of the less expensive ones (although they say they're more accurate than a chain setup), is BS. Everyone Ive seen has had more slop in it then I'd EVER allow in a chain setup.
If you want it for noise, you'll have noise. If you want something for accuracy/power/longevity/easy on parts, belly up and get a good double roller.

Or, if you really want it to be trick, have your cam grinder grind you a reverse rotation camshaft, then run a gear-to-gear setup that doesn't use an idler. Never seen one for a SBF, but I have seen then for SBC.
