This is around the inside of the rear window on a 65 fastback. Is this wood trim a base to staple the headliner to? Is it necessary? I figured plenty of glue plus the stainless trim would hold things in place but if not please let me know. Or if my memory that the liner staples to this wood is wrong please let me know what it is for.

You might have to save what you can. I'll have to look around as I was thinking that they come or used to with the mud guards for the inner fenders, maybe they supply staples only?

Here's 3 places. So they are out there if you use different search terms.

These are stainless.

How do you install these "staples" thru the rubber or thru the door and into the weather strip? Is there at tool or process that people have been using? Pliers? Hammer?

This was in reference to the cork looking strips around the rear window. I’d imagine a staple gun is ok for that.
there are stapled rubber elsewhere. The rubber in front of the cowel that seals the hood to the firewall comes to mind. Around the doors is just glued plus some molded in pins for alignment.
I always assumed they had an industrial staple gun to install thru steel but I don’t know how the hobbiest does it.

I only know of the big staples for like the bottom of the inner fender wells on the '64 and other years i'm sure. The person just pushed them through and bent them over. If not going for concourse I'd pre-drill little holes and use screws but be sure they aren't overly long if there isn't much clearance on the back side. Fyi, the board is actually like cardboard or layers of paper but they do sell the rubber type tack strip also.
