HEI is usually associated with a chebby distributor, if that is your case it is a simple 1 wire hookup. if not someone else will chime in.

Do you have one of the aftermarket GM HEI distributors or is it an original Ford Duraspark unit?

If it's GM HEI with the coil in the cap, you just need one positive wire from the ignition (switched) to the coil (in the cap).

If it's Ford Duraspark, you need a Duraspark or GM HEI ignition module and a wiring diagram.

looking at the motor, the hookups are on the right side. 1 is labeled tach and the other is labeled positive +. that should take care of your problem unless there is something im missing.

they are probably looking for a factory harness. if that doesnt keep it from starting then dont worry about it.

thw wires in question are from the pickup out of the base of the dis. they plug in to the cap right behind the tach and positive terminal on the box of the dist cap they should be red, orange black. Some are red,tan and black etc. it varies. Yes you need to hook them up or the coil will have no signal from the module under the cap and hence forth no spark
