Hi I'm new to the site but I have found it very informative. I'm building a 64 factory experimental race car clone and I'm in need of help. I have an 8.8 from an Exploder that I need to narrow. I need to be 55" rotor to rotor. The axle measures from the center of the pinion to the short side flange 27 1/2". The plan is to remove the long side axle tube, cut it down to match the short side and install another short axle. Has anyone done this or am I out to lunch. To shorten the axle I plan to drill out the pins remove the axle tube from the center section. Cut it down press it back in the center section and fully weld both tubes. I have seen axle tubes cut and the butt ends of the tubes welded togather but this seems to be a weak point in my opinion. Anybody have any experiance with this. This will be my first of many forums, I have lots of issues.
