The gruesome, gruelling, grinding continues.

Haven't even started on the intake runners yet.

Started some clean up in there.

I'm exhausted already or maybe I'm combusted. Doesn't help that its 100 in the shade over here. None of these photo's show finished yet. I'm debating the pro's and con's of grinding down the valve guides any more than I already have. My first inclination is not?

I took the exhaust port roofs on up to 1.48. the 1 5/8 super comps would handle more than that but I don't think my 289 needs any more.

I'm doing the marked side(from photo) and top of the intakes for 2.10 x 1.28. There was not a lot of work needed on the intake side to get there.

I've been working the valve guide parts of the valve pockets for a while. My question is how close to this

(photo from Weingartner racing of cnc port)

do I really need to get. It seems like a bit of over kill but then I'm only making in the low 400's horsepower and no boost.

That looks pretty darn good to me. Sounds a lot like what I did to a set of DOOE heads for my 331 and it's making 430 HP. 1.48 x 1.25 exhaust ports, 2.10 x 1.25 intake ports, 1.94/1.6 valves and heads that are probably 5 lbs lighter than they started out at. Intake volume is 160cc and exhaust volume is 60cc

What size valves though? With 289 heads, a 1.94 intake requires a lot of unshrouding. A lot of improvement can be had by unshrouding in general.

I have 1.94 x 1.60 Chevy necked down, back cut, Stellite tipped, bla bla's in these heads. As cast the heads were 58 cc chambers, 180 cc intake and 64 cc exhaust. The chambers were de-shrouded some but I'm doing a bit more since I'm going to have them angle cut.

I think I'm going to go on down on eigher side of the valve guides down in the pockets.

This is an as cast Rousch 200 chamber which looks somewhat like mine were.

A ported GT 40.

Shady Dell Speed Shop

Salter Race Engines

Somebody here on Ford Muscle did these.

Where mine are at the moment.

It looks like I have more work to do around the valve guides.
