I have a 393 ford stroker in a 1983 mustang fox body, cams is 6800 max RPM, tire 28", I need help to choice the best gear for the best performance in a 1/4 mile, these are the number that I have
Using 4.10
Best time in 1/4 mile 11.96, 60' 1.75, RPM in line 6000
Using 4.30
Best time in 1/4 mile 11.83, 60' 1.62, RPM in line 6200
What do you think I should go to 4.56 gear?

I forget to said, Im running a AOD transmission, these are the radios in my AOD, is not a stock transmission, but the way Im passing the line in third gear

First gear is 2.84:1
Second Gear 1.55:1
Third gear 1.00:1

Because you are an auto,stay with the gear you have now.
Your best time most likely came from the better 60ft. Theres alot more to gain in the 60 by working thru suspension than gear.
Using drag shocks, drag bar, air bags and poly bushings on engine,trans and control arms have dropped our 1/4 times over 4 tenths and were full street with AC driven 60 miles to track.

borrow a set of shorter slicks and see what it does for you... cheaper and easier that a gear change....


as mentioned above, you have a lot left on the table in your 60 ft times...

4.56 and keep the 28's. The taller tire will hook better. It is about the same cost to swap the ring and pinion(if you do it yourself) as it is to get a different set of slicks.

How much stall do you have?

Here is what I know:

Well let me tell you something my car have a cams for max 6800 but Im shifting first at 6000 and second 6500, also my car is original, have a stock suspension, also have the compresor, A/C is working, brake still working with hidrobuster
The 4.30 gear is not mine, I have a 4.10, that's for the question I have to buy one and I was thinking 4.30 o 4.56
Altitud is 2' about 5 meter, temp is arround 40 celsiun degree, 38 some times
MPH in our track doesnt read the MPH.
Let me know your ideas

He was also using stock rods-but has bought some I beams with ARP bolts.

Note that he lives in Venezuela and the racing temps are always over 100F!!!

I suggested to continue to use 4:30's and concentrate more on the suspension--including adding battle boxes and dropping car weight.

Can anyone offer him some ideas of what suspension parts will benefit his street/strip Fox bodied car?
