[64 xl conv]

i just bought a barn find 1964 xl, and i am convinced my car has gremlins. every time i fix something, something else breaks. just completed water pump, thermostat, fuel pump, power steering pump, starter and solenoid change out. Set timing adjusted carb. starts and runs fine, drove for 1/2 hour and get back to my shop and car will not turn off. i had to pull battery ground.
i put ground back on and the dash lights stay on with switch off. so i started up and same problem wont shut off. car is running, switch in off position, i unplugged the alternator to see if it was back feeding and the car kept running. that should rule out the alternator.
so i think it is the ignition switch or new solenoid is bad.
how do i narrow it down without just swapping parts.

make sure the small wires on the relay are correct. s terminal should only be hot when cranking, running no power on i terminal

good advice. ^.
does it have an aftermarket radio? i have -seen- the memory wire back feed the ignition switch as well. (not on one of mine). or, the ign switch is a culprit as well. the starter relay is a cheap part to replace a swell, if its wired correctly, it -can- be bad. def check that 1st.

Well I found the problem. PO rigged aux hot tap of back of ignition switch to feed power windows. This was energizing frayed coil feed wire on switch.
I had found the other end of this wire when I fixed the power windows. PO bypassed factory window power feed. When I found the factory wire it was hot so I went back to it and never traced the aux feed to connection .
tomorrow I will have to repair harness at switch. I do not know why people Butcher up wire harness.

Many times you just have to undo what people did over the years. Bought a 62 Falcon that had 3 fuel pumps on it. I got rid of the two electric pumps and put a good cam-driven pump on it. Fixed. Same thing with the wiring. They had a piece of 1/4 OD copper tubing in the fuse box! Lots of fun finding and pulling off all the band aids.
