This is a simple question. I need To know what type of paint to use for the dash and inner metal panels. I'm changing the color to black but need to know what paint is right for it. Tha car is a 66 Mustang coupe Thanks!!
They used gloss laquer, if I remember correctly. You'll be better off to strip the doors so the grain will show up better. Shoot it for the most professional look, but spray can jobs can turn out nice if you prep well and have a steady hand.
The factory used SEMI-GLOSS for interior with quite a bit of flattening agent.
PPG has a very close mix, if you use Lacquer, use a medium thinner. If you use Acrylic Enamel, use a little flattening agent, to one quart of reduced enamel, add 2 ounces of flattening agent, do a test spray and see if it's the desired effect.
From the Mustang Restoration handbook.

I bought my interior paint from Cal Mustang. It is a laquer. I used an exacto knife to strip the old paint off of my doors, it worked good and left the grain. Use a primer. I didn't and its only been 5 months and mine has surface rust.
