I am getting some oil residue in the hose from my PCV to carb. I am running ford racing valve covers which don't have the greatest baffles. Any suggestions on an easy fix? I have been looking at the baffled breather grommets but wonder if they restrict the pressure too much? I may just have to rework the baffles and see if that helps. I really don't want to disturb them as they attached with self tapping screws which may or may not loosen up if removed and reinstalled.

Ford Racing makes a few different styles of valve covers and I don't know how all the different baffles are made, but there are a few different options that I know of.

1. The pcv should be shielded from direct oil splatter.

2. If it is flowing too much air you can buy an adjustable one . . I use these on occasion.

3. You can get an oil separator that goes in the pcv line.

Here is a pic of the baffles. As you can see they are pretty open. The rubber grommet comes down inside the cover but leaves about 1/4 inch clearance to the topside of the baffle.

ah yes, i know that one and it kinda sucks.

below is a stock 1968 and later style . . the area that is open on yours [where the tape measure is] has a piece of metal covering it on the early cover [bottom photo] . . what happens is the oil splatter still gets in thru the open area on yours . . also the oil runs across the top of the valve cover and drips down onto the "baffle" where it can get sucked up by the pcv, especially if it has a lot of suction.

also notice how the early baffle has a low spot directly under the pcv which gives it a little room between the baffle . . it also has a hole in it so the oil will drain out.

if you do not want to use the oil separator, i suggest that you make a different baffle because no matter what you do, it will still allow more oil into the pcv than a good one will.

if it still sucks oil, you can get a lower flow one or the adjustable one i posted . . the problem you can run into with reducing the flow is that it can force more oily air out of your breather on the other cover.

another option to avoid the can is to use a moroso pcv . . it has a foam filter that reduces the amount of oil that can get into the pcv.

I installed a catch can, about a month ago, solved residue in lines for sure, hadn't checked it for contents since installed.
About 1/8" oil poured out, insides are thick with oil residue, so I think it was worth the 100 odd bucks.

I ended up fabbing up a new baffle that seals up very well compared to the stocker. After a quick test run I still had oil in the PCV hose. I did try running an open breather on it(instead of a pcv) and did not have any oil leakage onto the top of the valvecover where I did with the old baffle. So it is better in some ways but I will probably go to a catch can of some sort next summer.

ok, your pcv is flowing more than it needs to if you have a lot of oil . . you could just use the adjustable pvc i mentioned and greatly reduce the problem . . a pcv will always have some amount of oil in the hose because it is sucking up air that has atomized oil in it kind of like fog where there is a lot of water in the air.

obviously a catch can would work, however, if it were mine, i wouldn't want any more crap cluttering up my engine than necessary.

Frdnut: what about the other valve cover? do you have a hose from it to a fitting on your air cleaner?
That was the fix on my 63, air cleaner to dr. side cover, pcv in pass.side cover to back of carb, all good.

I am running a small oval air filter for hood clearance and there is no provision to attach anything to it. I did notice some oil leaking from the drivers side valve cover breather when I was at the track so I will have to fab up a baffle for that side as well.
