Everyone out there probably has an opinion on muffler sound and selection. My issue is that the Magnaflow worked well prior to my engine upgrade and now my 289 sounds more like John Force's top fuel. Would the Dynomax quite down the exhaust or am I just wasting time and money. Would resonators on my 66 mustang exhaust help. I was thinking that putting some prior to the exhaust tips.

With the Dynomax turbos I can talk to a passenger in a normal voice while listening to the radio when cruising. Nice low rumble from the tailpipes at idle, but will still put out a decent sound under hard acceleration.

I went from Magnaflows to Dynomax turbos and it's quieter. I have (had) the 2 1/2" stainless mandrel bent Magnaflow system and couldn't stand the noise and 'boomyness'. I changed the mufflers to Dynomax turbos and it's more quiet and the noise seemed to have moved rearward so conversation is possible. Still not quite quiet enough but I can live with it for now.

I also have the tips turned down 90 degrees right before the rear valence and this may be contributing to the boomyness so my next move is to get rid of the turn downs and go straight out the back , ala GT style.

Dynomax superturbo are not straighthru like Magnaflow one, so you will loose HP..

Dynomax ultraflow are straighthru and they sound no quieter than magnaflow mufflers.

You should try to swap your mufflers with longer magnaflow ones, with straigthru design, longer they are, quieter they are...

Just in from setting the carb and ignition. Thanks for the info on the sound difference. Most of my driving will be in town cruising and not at the track. the drone at 2000 rpm just drills through the floor. I even have Dynamat and under coating. I understand there will be a loss in Hp, but may give it a try. Sound like the tone at idle is acceptable. I was quoted $90 each. May get a better price in Bellingham Wa.

At the end of this video you can hear what my 393 sounds like with Dynomax turbos through tailpipes. Love the sleeper rumble . . . . .

Magnaflow are not supposed to be droning mufflers, if so, sound absorbing material must be cooked and gone away...

How old are they?

Dynomax Ultra-Flows and Magnaflows are pretty much identical. You can pick either up, and see straight through them. They both use a perforated core to absorb the sound. However, over time, the packing tends to work its way loose, and get blown out the tailpipe.... and they gradually get louder and louder. After a few years and a lot of miles, they can get pretty noisy.

With this type of 'absorption' muffler, the longer they are, the quieter they are. There's not sufficient room under a mustang sized car to run the extra long mufflers, but on longer cars, the longer units can be used for a quieter sound... with no sacrifice in performance.

From what I can make out in the video Dennis that sound is nice and deep compared to what I have right now. There may be a chance that the Magnaflow have blown some packing out, so going to the Dynomax Super Turbo is worth a try. I had some turbo mufflers on the car years ago and they sounded great , but the manufacturer went out of business. I also need to get rid of my GT Tips they make a odd sound at idle with the louvers. May want to go with the straight tips. Thanks for all the help.

I did the opposite where I went from dynomax dual 2.5s with an H pipe to Magnaflow dual 2.5s with a custom X pipe. It is quieter with the Magnaflows which was a surprise. It must be the X pipe that has quieted it down and made it sound less like a boat.

I have to say it sounds a lot like a new car such as a Corvette or Mustang. I was told that the new hi performance cars have X pipes so maybe it explains why the car sounds like a new car. To explain what it sounds like when I open it up, it has a higher pitched sound as though the exhaust velocity thru the system is higher and the roar is higher pitched

I use 24" round magnaflow under my mustang, if you put them closer from the driveshaft, there is enough room..

There's just not enough room to do a proper tailpipe without running the muffler outlet pretty much right into the axle tube... which requires a pretty serious 90º bend right out of the muffler, and if you're using a muffler shop bender instead of store-bought mandrel bends, you'll end up with some seriously crushed/kinked pipe.

Flowmasters... or Flowdisasters. They do NOT run with the mufflers you can see straight through, like the Magnaflows and Dynomax Ultra Flows.

They work. Do you have any pictures where you can see the pipe going up and over the axle? That's where it gets cramped when using long mufflers... especially if you are trying to use a muffler shop to build the tailpipes. That sharp bend crushes the crap out of the pipe.

Muffler shop bends vs. store bought mandrel bends.

Excellent! I ALWAYS recommend those to people, as they are also very affordable!

If you tried to do muffler shop tailpipes with those long mufflers, it would look like crap, and be pinched really bad with that first tight bend.
