motorcraft 2bbl problems

I need some help if someone would want to help me. I put a 302 out of a 79 ltd into a 82 f150. I got everything in it but the 302 had a variable venturi on it that didnt run the best so i took it off and rebuilt an old mid 70s 2bbl and put that on it. I am having a lot of problems setting the carb. I cant get it to run good at all. It is missing really bad and when you wrap up the engine it runs a lot better and runs smoother. It also smokes a lot. I dont know what to do because i thought it was getting too much gas but i tried to adjust it and it didnt help. what i dont understand it ran real good in the car. I was just wondering if anyone has any advice for me.
