I actually use a steerign wheel puller/balancer puller. The hollow cross looking part. I put a bolt in one enad and thread it to the block somewhere and the other end either bolts to an existing threaded hole in the flywheel or a through bolt and nut if on flexplate. Very simple!

I always use a Socket on the Crank of the motor with a breaker bar on it
