Ok, I've been into cars since I was 5 and "helped" an uncle with his Model A pickup. My first car was a 40 Ford coupe in the mid seventies. I've had a run with GM products and then a spell with Mopar. I've been a body/paint guy for 30 years now and through a series of events I've aquired a 67 Fairlane 500 project. It's been a LOOONG time since I've tinkered on an old Ford for myself so I have my work cut out for me and I came here to find answers to a ton of questions.
The engine I am building is a 5.0 from a 91 Mustang GT. Is it difficult to keep the fuel injection setup or should I just get a carb and new intake? I have a C4 trans and the trans from the 91 Mustang but havn't really decided which one to use. My trans crossmember is missing but I found one from a 69 Fairlane, will it interchange? I'm buiding this car to be a local cruiser. It doesn't need to be a street stormer and I'm not really concerned with fuel mileage. I'm also interested in what size tires will fit out back without cutting up the car. Thanks for reading and I hope to be here learning for quite a while.

Wow...glad I didn't spend the money for a premium membership. Looks like I'm on my own with this Fairlane project. Thanks for all the help (sarcasm)

Hiya Chris,

Looks like your off to a good start......I've got a 66 myself.
The 5.0 will be no problem at all, you can have fuel injection if you want to mess with all that extra wiring and sensors but these old fords don't have the best wiring to begin with.....you might learn that as you go.

Myself.....I'll stick with a carb any day on my 66, injection is sweet but I like carbs better.

I'm sure you tranny is an OD type so if your thinking about getting headers make sure you get shorties. Long tube headers won't have enough room with that wider tranny.

Painless Wiring has some really good wiring harness fixes that you'll really like for the old ford. The headlight relay kit is a must!

The cross member might work with an OD tranny but from what I've heard all you have to do is turn it around and it should line up on the OD mount.....not positive about that. I've got the stock C4 in my 66 still and it works fine for me.

Tires.....I've got 15" rims and 28" tall tires in the back....27" would be better. Up front I've got 25" tall tires that work great, all my tires are 70 series since no fat boys will fit.

You didn't mention anything about brakes or power steering or what ever, if you have manual drum brakes all around then change it to at least disc brakes up front. There's several kits out there that bolt right up. I've got manual disc/drum brakes on mine also.

Radio.....If you have the stock AM radio still that's good, you won't find an AM/FM stock radio....66-67 didn't come with them. Some guys hack up the dash to fit a newer FM in but I put a Custom Sound secret radio under the back seat which as an Ipod hookup and remote....works good enough for me since I'd rather listen to the exhaust anyway.

There's alot of good after market places to get parts for your 67......start looking for window regulators, no one makes those so ebay or junk yards. You can get every window you need easy so no worry there.

I think that'll do you for now....don't worry about these old fellows here not commenting sooner they're taking naps or drinking beer, give them time and watch out for "FE" he's a pistol but know's his stuff really well.

Thank you Rick for your input, it really helps. I liked your car so much that I saved the pic and ordered the same wheels for mine. I got a trans crossmember and driveshaft off ebay over the weekend and just picked up a new windshield. I found Macs online so that will help too. The mechanicals are going to be my biggest problem...figuring out what works best with what and what upgrades can be done. The body is really good except for the floorpans but being a long time bodyman I can handle that. The car was a 289/auto without ps or power brakes.

some more pics. This area in the trunk is a major concern. I could build it from flat steel but really would like to find a factory piece to repair it. Seems like there could be a market for dash pads... mine is trash.

yes, you'll need to change out that oil pan and pickup.

As far as dash pads go...you can get a dash cap or cover that goes over the dash but I don't care for them at all. Just Dashes out of Washington or Oregan rebuilds dashes to stock specs but it cost mucho bucks! You might be able to find a better dash here from one of the guys or ebay.

My 15" wheels are from Summit with a 4" backspace if I remember right.
