Folks - I am going to be looking for a used tranny pretty soon. Te old cruisomatic is on its last legs and I am going to do the C6 swap. I buy most of my parts used and a a bargian shopper and while I know what C4 and AOD stuff costs I don't have a lot of failiarity in the C6 market.

I will be looking for a "known good" type C6 but don't want to pay for a rebuild. Any thoughts/experiences that you can share about I should expect to spend on something that is better than a core but still a bargian?

Thanks...

What engine do you have in the '65? And what do you mean by "good type" of C6?

Buying a used tranny is the same as rolling dice.

"it worked when pulled" usually means "Change the fuild and she will do ya a while, But how long is anyones guess"

By "known good" I mean "worked when pulled" from a source that has some credability. I realize that it is a crap shoot but I would rather buy one that has a shot of being of good for a while than one that is known to be a core.

This is an FE car - currently a 352 with a little N2O...

You need an old c6 from a car with the 14 inch tail housing. You're gonna have to rebuild it, and maybe build it up a bit with the NOS. Look around for somebody who's pulled the tranny loose and has it sitting around. Put an ad in the local newspaper or Thrifty Nickel type paper. I wouldn't recommend putting any tranny not rebuilt from a reputable person on your car - yeah, you might get 5000 miles off it, or you might get 5. I paid $100 for a 69 c6 and was shocked by how gooda shape it was in for sitting around 10 years in some old backyard barn.

I had one of those 'worked when pulled' cruisos. I pulled it and it didn't work good when pulled. But a few years later putting it back in the car with fluid change it didn't do anything at all. The one I have now is one of those but it is starting to die after about 5000 miles. At least I got that much out of it though. C6's might be tougher from what I've heard.

C-6's are hard to kill. Just keep on eye open for one. Check the fluid on the dip stick, if it doesn't smell burnt and is red in color it's probably a good one. Price anywhere from free to $200.
This is what I was looking/hoping for... If I can get somethign for a couple hundred that can keep me going for the next few months I'll be happy. The reason that I am not interested in a "decent" built C6 is that I am saving my pennies for a FE prepped - very built AOD (or an aod and adaptor plate). Lighter than the C6 - less loss, and an overdrive that let's me run 411+ gears and still have a tolerable freeway ride.

I don't have the coin for this right now but the and I doubt that I will before the crusiomatic goes away...

Y'all must be the most unlucky people with used trannys on the planet! Out of the 100 (minimum) boneyard transmissions I've installed over the years, I've had 2 bad ones. I also used to hustle bux selling as-pulled motors and trannys and NEVER had a return. In fact, I sold a Turbo 350 I'd used in a circle track car for 2 seasons. I ran this thing in Low to get the correct final drive at the rear wheels, plugged the modulator to raise the line pressure plus ran NO cooler, not even the radiator cooler. The buyer put it in his warmed up 350 powered Camaro, pounded the heck out of it and it was still working fine 3 years later. For all I know, it may still be...
