I'm reading to use transmission fluid type A for the power steering in my 67 mustang, is this correct? Can I use power steering fluid? The brand I have is STP. Will this work?

I've alway been told power steering fluid is transmission fluid (type A) It might have a different dye added to change the color. I also heard that a transmisson can run hotter than a power steering pump. That being said, ATF should be better and not break down as fast and handle the heat. So why is PSF cost more than ATF if ATF is more superior. I think it's a money market thing or is it because you're buying it in more bluk, 32 oz instead of 16oz

The older style PSU used ATF for a long time. The new ones now should only have PSF due to the difference in materials and tolerences used now. Just like the new Manual trans use ATF style fluid and not the old 90-140wt gear oil. Oils have come a long way and you actually have to be more careful of what goes in which part now. Most of the 8.8 rearends are syn oil too.

It isn't the same, but I've run ATF in my beater with P/S for a long time.

Why? it leaks out slower than the P/S fluid
