It's a 500, and it says that no 500 4 doors were made. I know that regular fairlanes and fairlane XL's were made in 4 door, but not the 500. Please help..

Look at your body code if you still have the door tag. That's the codes Truckstop posted up for you.

Thanks to a member of this forum, I just learned this myself. XL's had a locking glove box, trim on the pedals, courtesy lights on the door panels, and a fancier interior. Don't forget about the "club coupe" either. Not sure what that involved, but it might be what you're dealing with.

Hope that helps!

Alright, it is a 54B, which means it is an XL! That's awesome. I did notice that is has a locking glove box, and a lot of chrome and a very nice interior. Ok so what else is different about the XL? Thanks again.

For whatever reason, FoMoCo made a big deal about the "courtesy lights" on the door panels, check for those. Just cuz ya don't see them on the outside, doesn't mean that someone didn't put "500" door panels on her, and the lights are hanging inside the door. With me?

I'm still trying to narrow this down myself, what exactly did the XL option include. Unfortunately I found out mine is a plain Jane 2dr hardtop "500", but I still would like to know. You know, for "swap meet" knowledge. hehehehe

Alright, I figured out that it must have had the courtesy lights in the doors because their is a hole on each side of the car in the doors that apperas a light would have sat in. So now I am certain it is an XL. Now my new delema is what size the engine is. How can I be sure of what size it is?

Alright, I looked in the door tag and all that is there is the vin#, body type, color, trim, date, D.S.O., axle, and trans. Where is the engine code located? I would really just like to know if my engine is a 390, or 289. Thanks again.

ALright, thank you very much. I see that it is in fact a 289. But I thought that they only put 390's in the XL's. Any help??

I didn't ask what a 390 was, I'm not retarded. I wanted to know why my car, which is an XL, has a 289 in it, when I read things that say only 490's were put in those cars. Please help.

all the doors should be the same, now if theres a hole in your door panel that another thing, i think my other 66 fairlane(i have two) title says gt..but its not...i think the dmv got it wrong. there is nothing wrong with the plain jane 500! they are all the same to me so long as you mod it out.
i am building one for roadracing and the lighter 5.0 is an advantage w/ a supercharger for me, sure a 427 can go faster but lighter weight is my goal.
btw both of my 500's have locking glove box.

I must have misread your question...

I've seen 289's in ALL galaxies and Fairlanes... Worked with a '64 Gal Convert, all original with a 289....
I've worked on one and seen a few Fairlane 500's with the 289... In fact... every damn Fairlane I wanted to buy as a kid had a damn 289 in it and I wanted a 390 car...

Ok, so I"ll be happy with what I have, a '66 Fairlane 500 XL with a 289. I have a lot of work to do to restore it, but I have already put a new edlebrock intake maniforld on it, and a new holly 4 barrel carb. Oh, and did I mention I'm only 15 years old? So I have my entire life to get this beauty back to showroom condition. Thanks guys for all of your help.
