Has anyone found a junkyard equivalent rack and pinion to install in the 64-65 falcons. I hear of the after market gammit out there but to spend 1500+ is just unreasonable. I tried a center steer R&P from a GM but tweaked my tie rods too much and had to scrap that, will try again later. I heard or read somewhere someone put one in from an 89 chevy lumina. I got the rack it looks doable just wondering if anyone out there has tried this? Thanks.

I too have had that thought but have yet to follow uo on it as of yet. I do not know which for certain would be a match but I personally would be sizing up Pinto, Maverick, Mustang, Explorer, and Taurus before I would start trying to fit Chevy parts on my Falcon.
Flaming River is pushing 1971-72 Pinto Manual racks for 225.00 for rods but no indication as to what they will fit in?
Try calling the guys at Auto works down in San Diego check for them online to get a number.
Good luck like to know what you come up with.

Look for modern foreign cars to supply the r&p for your car. I've heard 2002 Toyota Camrys, late model Saabs and Volvos even may be able to fit. It's a lot of engineering, but probably not any more than fitting any American car's rack to.

Thanks for the info and as an added requirement, the rack must be a rear steer as the falcon is, hence eliminating pinto mustang etc. I am trying to not go the mustang II setup as yet. Also to keep in line with the Falcon dimensions the center link is 24" where the tie rods mate up thus the rack should be 24" at the pivot points to minimize bump steer issues. But I appreciate the info on the other possibilities and will keep the site informed on the progress.

Well, Falcon Fans the rack and pinion has been installed and accomplished. I thank those for the insight to the Dodge Omni suggestion as this is what I used. When I get the chance I will post pics. But let me give you what I did: First Maval Stock Manual Dodge Omni Rack with Mustang tie rods. I used Dearborns xbrace and welded on a plate with which to mount the rack. Next was modifying my steering column and used Flaming River square D joints to connect the steering to the rack and walla!!!! I have since taken it to the alignment shop and she aligned quite well. Driving she steers fine and tracks well. I will be continuing to test this set up for proper application and tire wear. All in all the setup has cost me <$500, time doesn't count and all parts come from stock applications. My only headache was the driver header issue. I have side pipes on my car so shorties are my header of choice. Well the drive side dumped right into the steering shaft. Fix was a custom header. Oh well. My son also has a 65 Ranchero which we will be fitting with this setup and we'll be exploring the header issue again, but with no side pipes and long tubes we'll see. Again when I get the chance I will post pics of the project. For those in the California area April 9th 2006 is the Fabulous Fords Show at Knotts (Buena Park). The car will be there.

You are the man!!! Damn good job!!! I've been looking into this for years on my 62 comet wagon and hopefully your post will inspire me to get my RP system in this summer. Thanks for the info!!

Damn nice job!!! How is the turning radius? I have heard a rumer that the travel of that rack is slightly shorter than the factory steering set-up. Is it noticable in normal daily driving? How is the steering effort? I notices it is not a power rack and you have fairly wide front rubber. Thanks for any insight. Your Friend, Ben

Ok here is the skinny on the rack and pinion. I have driven the car at least 200 miles so far with no problems. I had a friend of mine in a 68 corvette and I followed him to see what my turning radius was like, well it's not close. My son has a 65 Ranchero and have yet to get together with him to follow and do tight turns to check the turning radius issue. But I did check the travel of the front wheels with his ranchero and my futura and they appear to have the same travel. So I'm not sure I lost any, I was expected to lose some as racks don't have the travel as the stock steering. I will continue to test and keep everyone posted. I did call Maval about this issue and they can do a custom mod to my rack and get 20% more travel. This maybe an option when we do my sons steering. As far as the effort of steering. This thing steers with one finger no need for power assist, but don't let that deter you. You can put a power rack in as you see fit. Some of the finer tuning I plan on doing on the next installation is on the steering column. As you look closely to the column near the firewall the column was cut and all I did was install a washer and bushing to support the steering shaft. Well my machining (grinding) didn't come out perfect and I do have a very some amount of play there. Next time I will mic this and have a precision donut installed to remove the play. The copper bushing pressed on the shaft was luck, I found a perfect fit and pressed it onto the steering shaft and if fits right in the inner tube like a glove. Again it probably would be better to have a roller type bearing made and installed. Next time. Hope this helps. Again I am contunuing to test its feel but I am very please with the results so far.

did you buy the rack new and what did it cost.
or did you pull it from a car.
i wonder if this will work on my 68 falcon.

The rack came new from Maval and if memory serves me it was $229 plus shipping. (http://www.mavalgear.com/MavalWrldTrade.html). Here is the idea of how I choose the Omni rack unit. The center link on my 64/65 Falcon is 24" center hole to center hole. The omni rack ball center is 24" so it replaces the center link. The rest, tie rods just need as in my case mustang ends to mate up with the granada spindles and I just installed it in the same if not better location of the original geometry. The rack is a straight line from spindle to spindle. It is tucked up under the oil pan and provides plenty of clearance in the event I need to remove it for service. So if your center link is 24" and my guess is it is, then you should have no problem with this installation. I have more pics if you want and I can email them.

In your first post you said you tweeked your tie rods too much when you were working on the GM R&P. What do you mean "tweeked"? I'm just finishing installing GM R&P in mine.

I can't quite tell from the photos how the Mustang tierods attach to the rack ends. Do you still use the sleeves. Also you mentioned you had to modify the headers. What was involved there? I too am using the shorties and am concerned with what changes I will have to make to them. Great job btw and thanks for sharing all this with us. Its people like you that makes this hobby what it is.

To answer the questions to the last two post:
1) On the GM rack it was a center steer rack much like the one posted on a corvette web site. What I did was made a plate that bolted to the rack and used an extra stock center link attached to that which mated to my spindles. So again I basically took the tie rods centerlink and attached it to the plate on the rack. Well the alignment was off and this is where I tweaked my centerlink by bending it to get the correct alignment. Not a good thing, it was worth a shot but failed and thats when I went with the omni rack setup. Much better and easier.
2) The rack doesn't use sleeves, I have mustang female tie rods ends that thread onto the omni rack. You can buy stock mustang tierods that thread right onto the rack. As for the header issue if you try using shorties (Hedman) then you are going to run into the same issue I did. The collector will hit the steering shaft big time. I had my header guy cut my existing header and retube it to clear the rack. Cost $485, ouch yes but since I wanted to keep my side pipes I bit the bullit. When I do this with my sons 65 Falcon we'll see what comes about with long tube headers.

sanonofre64, you've really started the old wheels turning upstairs. I assume you probably already considered this but, I noticed that your column joint is fairly close to the firewall. Would it help to clear the header if it was extended out a couple of inches and/or would it put too much stress/bind on the joints?
