Hiya, Can you guys tell me if there are any gains to be had, if a radiator has top and bottom tanks... or side tanks?

Is one design better than the other?

Cheers

Yes, a side to side tank is more efficient....its called a 'crossflow' design as opposed to a 'downflow' design with the tanks on top and bottom.

Radiators that have side tanks are called cross-flow. They
are far more efficient than the style with top & bottom
tanks. I have no figures to back up my statement but
that's pretty much gospel. And don't fall into the "trap"
that aluminum radiators are best. They're best at draining
your wallet. Aluminum radiators are NOT as efficient as
they are marketed to be. Aluminum radiators being "the
best" is probably close to the biggest automotive fallacy
out there. (And that one I do have actual figures on)
