i just purchased a 71 ranchero Squire,
vin number 1A49M121014
body 66E
color N
trim TB
Axle 6
trns U
DSO 21
the carb air breather has 302 on a decal but looking at the vin as far as i have found info on the web M is for a 351, im new to Fords can someone help me. The hood on the car looks diferrent than the other pic i have seen online. Here is a pic of me taking it out of a shed where has been since 96.

How do i know if i have a 351C or a 302? and whats the difference. Thanks

Hi, and congrats on finding a 71. There are lots of differences on the engines, but here is an exerp to help you get started....

from ehow:

5 Count the number of valve cover bolts on the engine. FE engines numbered 332, 352, 360, 361, 390, 406, 410, 427 and 428 have 5 valve cover bolts. 6 bolts will indicate a 351W engine. The 351W engine has a half inch step down to the distributor while the 289 and the 302 will not.The 302 small block was also used by Chevrolet. The 429 and 385 series 460s have 7 valve cover bolts and the Cleveland modified 335 series engines will have 8 valve cover bolts. 460 engines were used in police cars in the late 70's. These are all Ford engines

The VIN engine character identifies the car being assembled with a 351 4V. It could have been either a W or C. Positive I.D (other than visual) would depend on the Engine Asm Tag.

The car may have had an engine swap at one time or just an air cleaner swap.

Body Code 66E identifies it as being assembled as a SQUIRE which is a very high trim level. The hood shown is the proper hood for that trim level. There were actually four hoods released for service on those period TORINOS.

Do you need info on differentiating a 302/351W or 351C?

Reman has you covered-

from ehow:

- Count the number of valve cover bolts on the engine. 6 bolts will indicate a 351W engine (or 302).

Another good telltale sign is where the upper radiator hose connects to the motor, the 351C at the block, the 302/351w was on the intake manifold.

i counted the bolts as per Reman advice and it has 6, i did not look at the distribuitor, the hose is connected to the intake and it has a 2v carb. I got the engine running this afternoon, now i need to buy a radiator, because some young kids stole it to sale the cooper, hope to have it on the road soon, by the way i replaced the starting solenoid and it will not start at the ignition switch, can my switch be bad? o maybe something else. anyi input will be appretiated.
here is a video of the first start.

the gas tank is full of bad gas thats why the big gas jug is there to collect it, and the hanging one is my temp gas tank.

I agree, a little on the thin side to be the 351 W, and is sure no Clev.

Look on the back of the intake.If its a 302 the firing order will be 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8.If its a 351w it will be 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8.The last firing order can also be a 302 HO but the HO is a new model.If it is that firing order a 302 will have roller lifters in it.If you don't want to go that deep Pull the valve covers.On the top of one of the heads it will say 302 or 351.
