Hello everyone. I recently purchased a '73 Ranchero 500 (351C 2-V, FMX) and while going to my local junkyards looking for parts, I found a '73 Ranchero GT with the full instrument cluster (Tach, oil pressure, etc...).

My question is what do I need to put that cluster in my car. Do I need to swap the wiring harness or just splice into my existing harness? I know I need to get a wiring diagram, but I was wondering if anyone else has done this swap and what problems they encountered if any...

I'll give you my experience, which won't help much. When I bought my 73 GTS, it had the full instrument cluster in the trunk. The seller said he had not put it in because he lacked the wiring harness. I wasn't that interested in having the factory gauges (my car has after market gauges), so I put the cluster on ebay. A local guy bought it. He said he already had the harness. About a week later he told me it was in and working. He said the swap was a pretty simple evening's work.

So, I know nothing first hand, but from what happened I would say get the harness when you get the cluster.

Hopefully, somone who has done it will chime in.

I just got done talking to someone about that you can buy the guages and run the necessary wires but from what he said it is hit and miss if you dont know the wiring layout, the best bet is to get the entire harness out to the motor and all if you need to rebuild it at least you have everthing.

It's simple just plug in your existing plug in back of cluster, speedo also, tach has 2 wires coming off that go to coil,amp guage has to have shunt which is just a 14 guage wire to a connection block to alt. switch oil pressure sending unit to manual, electric wire goes from back of your guage to sending unit. Makes it alot easier to have the small harness that comes out of fire wall to a plug that goes to tach oil and amp Your gound wire screws in next to steering column on inside of car make sure ground is good must have 12 volts to tach.I did it on mine, switched from idiot lights to rally cluster on 79 ranchero.Let me know if you have any trouble.

Thanks everyone for the reponses. I went back the next day and pulled the cluster out along with the wiring harness (to be safe) and of course the cluster bezel. Everything cost me around $50 bucks.

I'll let everyone know how the mod went...
