What ever happen to 2 speed rear ends?
does anyone still make them

well I did get some response about the
axle. Just about every auto maker of the
30's, 40's had a 2 speed rear axle available. Most notable is the Columbia
rear end, but I know there were other makes.
I always thought that it would be the
answer to some of the fuel economy that
we look for. You can have a tall gear for
drag racing, and a low gear for cruising.

Ford had a two speed axle option for there musclecars in 1969-1970.

It was used mostly on the Boss 302 and Boss 429 cars, but I have seen them in other models.

It was switched by a cable that ran up by the shifter or stick for the trans.

I ran some articals a while ago here that showed how they looked and worked, they are very rare units in any car.
