It depends what year block. Early blocks have blind holes that don't go into the water jacket like the newer roller blocks

Might be worth checking before you do, my 71 302 has blind holes, sealer not applied. The original factory bolts had no sealer on them either and I know it was original when I tore the motor down.

my 74 block has blind holes: no sealer needed. take 1 bolt out and check the bolt hole. see if it bottoms out with a pick. if u already have water in the motor, does it come out the hole?

No sealer on my 69 302 but sealer required on my sons 94 GT 5.0.
