My 68 Torino GT doesn't have shoulder belts, but when I see pics of other restored cars, I see shoulder belts nicely folded up at roof. Did the '68 not come with shoulder belts?

I'm restoring it, and want to her right.

I found out that in '68, shoulder belts were an option. I wonder how they sold that, "So the optional shoulder belt will prevent your face from smashing the wheel." Personally, I'd like to see you put that money towards the 428."

If memory serves me correctly, they became required equipment by Federal guideline effective Jan 1, 1969. Prior to that I believe they were optional, or at the very least, not mandatory.

Because of concern over push-back from consumers, they were integrated into the roof rail. They may have been mandatory equipment, but Ford didn't want them to be mandatory to wear over concerns of losing potential buyers.

I don't believe this fully answers your question, but might be helpful.
