I have put this engine together.
It fired right up, first try.

It runs, but shakes a lot more than the old 289 I took out.
Engine has run for around 5 hours, but car has only driven around 10 miles.

I reused the flexplate from the old engine.
The balancer on the old engine (D20E-6316-A2A) is a 28oz.

The vibration may be caused by missfire?

I have changed leads and plugs.
#3 and #8 plugs looked black.
I have measured the frequency of pulses on each of 8 leads, and it matches engine RPM.

I have done a compression test.
Average 194 psi. Lowest/highest difference is 5%

Lifter preload was set and reset to 0 lash + 180

I have removed the inlet manifold to check for vacuum leads.
I have removed the heads to look for any obvious mechanical defects.

Parts have done ~1000miles since new/machined
Block (289)
Crank (Eagle Stroker Kit 16022030)
Cam (Edelbrock 2122)

New parts
Aluminum heads
Roller rockers
Pushrods
Bearings
Holley Sniper 550-511
Pistons and rings
Harmonic Balancer SUM-163289 (External, 28 oz. imbalance)

man those plugs look terrible. its like the front half of your engine is lean, and the back half is rich.
is this the same carb that came off the 289?
if it is, i'd be adjusting the idle mixture via a vacuum gauge.

I’m no expert and it’s hard enough to diagnose on the internet, so
What kind of shape are the cam lobes in?
I know nothing about that crankshaft, but can you reuse the old flywheel without having it balanced?
I would have dropped a cylinder at a time when it was assembled to verify a bad cylinder, or if it’s a bad vibration. But hindsight is 20/20.

i'm going to go out on a limb here - somethings up with the Sniper, or there's a couple shop rags stuffed in your intake manifold. :)
plugs 2, 5, 6, & 7 aren't getting any (or not enough) fuel...those things are bright white.

I think the lobes looks Ok. Cam was previously broken in correctly. When I reinstalled it, I used assembly lube and primed the oil system.

I guess it's not ideal but I thought it would be ok as long as balancer, crank and flexplate was all 28oz?

No rags, that's for sure.
I guess going back to the old Edelbrock 1406, would be a good test.
