I'm getting ready to disassemble my 1987 5.0L Engine. I'm going to measure everything and see what it needs for rebuilding. Any recommendation for a good source for Spec's. I need all the necessary dimensions and tolerances?

But the big engine builders here can give you clearance tolerances and the like if you give them a little time, or if you're a little more specific in your questions.

Let's see how long it will take an experienced engine builder to post off the top of his head all of the specs he needs.

Notice how I said be a little more specific in his questioning?

How about this Kul, I list them, and you fill out the specs? Cool beans? We will start with Ten items of interest for the young man. After that he needs to get more specific with his questions.

1987 Ford 5.0


1: Main Bearing clearance {recommended Range}

2: Rod bearing clearance

3: Piston Ring Gaps

4: Crank bolt torque

5: Rod bolt torque (OEM only, all ARP bolts come with torque sheet)

6: Oil pump to block bolt torque

7: Head bolt torque & sequence

8: Intake manifold bolt torque & sequence

9: Valve lash specs

10: Timing specs (OEM of course)


Maybe together we can help this guy out. I use my unimaginative self for the list, and you supply the specs as per OE manufacturer and we'll get his ball rolling and make the world a better place with the Harmony and Peace that just oozes out of us. {of course, I can list the specs for 1 through 10 no problem, but it should be a concerted effort by the whole FM family, heck, maybe Putts will have some wooden spacer specs to add later, or a micro-visquine carb gasket advice}

These specs are taken care of by the crank grinder. The only spec you're going to need for the crank is bearing clearances, unless you're doing the re-grind yourself.

Cylinder size

you get that info with a bore gauge all by yourself. nobody can tell you the size of your own cylinder hole....

Cylinder out of round limit

this is a moot issue if you're rebuilding....

Cylinder taper limit

same goes here

Piston size

now this is just getting silly.... It's Your motor, the piston size will decry the amount that your cylinders get bored out and honed to. it's another question we cannot answer for you

Piston to cylinder wall clearance

this all depends on the type of piston you will be using, and the type of piston really depends on the REASON you are building the engine, Race, travel, leisure etc...
