While crawling under the 64, I noticed that the boot on the steering box is shrdded. Is that something that I'd better get fixed right away?

It is a horizontal boot on what appears to be like a shock absorber. I don't have a shop manual yet, so I don't know the proper name.

You can find those on ebay for about $15-20. They are easy to replace but I let mine go shredded for several months with no ill effects. Mine never leaked either before or after replacing it.

That's power assist cylinder. The boot is on there to help keep water and dirt off of the shaft to protect the seal.
