Last time at the track I had 205 70 14 Michelin's, I now have
255 40 17 Kumho's on the rear. Would just the size difference be worth anything for traction, a tenth or two? nothing? in terms of et, all else being equal...

They might be a slight advantage but unless they are a softer compound I've never found wider tires to be much help..The theory goes that once the tire starts to spin it sort of hydroplanes on its own little balls of rubber...In my teen days I found this to be true with my 1970 mustang(totally stock 302 auto). It would do much better burnouts with a set of M50-15s than with just a regular set of little 14 inch radials.

It does feel like I have to get on it more to break them loss.
Any ideas on how low of a tire pressure and could run w/ the
40 series and be safe on the track.

You can't make a street tire hook on the track, at least not very well. If you let a lot of air out, the tire will just cup and then you have even less traction. Drag Radials can run about 14-16 PSI, everything else should just stay with the recommended pressure or at least close. Street tires are hard compound tires, ment for lasting a while. What happens on the track is that the tires tear the rubber off the track and it does ball up under the tread. So they best way to get hook is to stay out of the water, do little more than a light clean off and leave like you're squishing a grapefruit, not stomping a june bug.
