HI ALL
OK my dad passed 3 years ago and one of my brothers is taking his 68
F-250 Camper Special.. (Truck was only used for Hunting, Fishing, camping We've had it sence it was new) The truck was always kept in top shape... Motor is fairly new, Truck has set for around 10years.. hears my thoughts..
1) Change oil
2) Drain fuel tanks (two)
3) take carb apart and clean (holly)
4) Batteries are shot (two) ...
It does have an isolator on the batteries so can I just replace the main one for now and just leave the other one hooked up or will it tax the system?? The truck has the last camper Dad built on it, 10' has everything in it...
5) maybe plugs and wires.
6) belts and hoses ?
Truck well be going from Boise Idaho to Phoenix, AZ.
This brother is vary Family orenated so I know that he well get some good use out it with his grand kids and great grand kids and I'm gald its going to family and not somebody else.
Is there anything else you all can think of??
Is there anything going on in Phoenex between the 26th and the 30th. Car shows/swapmeets or something?

you might want to look at the brakes to see if there is no problems

Truck is a 4 speed stick.
HHMMM Brakes... Should be OK but I'll look.. Big 8 lug drum's w/16" wheels.

Fuel lines for leaks. Radiator for rust through and a good flushing and changing of fluid. Rubber hoses underneath for same. Hmmmmm.......thats all I can add.

Tires are 10 years old? Even if they look new with no cracks your playing russian Roulette with them. (IMO) Read this

Especially since its now Summer and the heat, speed, and weight can play havoc with old tires. I know they are expensive, but so can a rollover in a top heavy camper.
Tires are something i just don't take chances with.

On a different note , check/replace the radiator and heater hoses and any REPLACE any rubber fuel line.
Also FLUSH the brake fluid completely. Its time consuming but really very easy. Use a vacuum pump setup and get about 3 BIG bottles of good fluid.(wrap the bleeder screws with teflon tape and you'll eliminate the bubbles that make you think that theres air in the system. Vacuum pumps do that)

Yah this sounds like alot of work but with a vehicle thats been sitting for 10 years this is just stuff that would have been done little by little anyways.

I agree with above 100% about flushing the brakelines- I'd also be concerned with stuck pistons in wheel cylinders/calipers and the caliper sliders themselves...at a minimum maybe compress the pistons when bleeding/flushing, and clean up the caliper sliders. here in ohio brake parts especially take it hard when they sit a long time- temp swings, high humidity, roadsalt residue...I cant recall ever 'wearing out' a set of pads or rotors yet, but end up replacing parts every year in one car or another.

My old f150 was a winter beater only for a long time, every fall I'd need to do something with the brakes- pad 'footprint' from sitting causes rust/pitting the rotor, caliper sliders rust, pistons stick, ebrake cables, lines, etc...exhaust needed minimum of a muffler and hanger every year...

Like the others, I sure would ck them tires for dry rot even thou they where new 10 years ago.
I agree :)

10 years is a LONG asss time for rubber to be sitting there... Long time.

Brake shoes should be NO issue, fluid flush on brakes is GREAT idea.

controlled first startup or just toss in a new thermostat for git's and shiggles.

You pretty much have it all accounted for....

Scrap the tires, reguardless of what they look like, change the shoes and or pads, check the master and wheel cylinders for the brakes, I'd change em out reguardless since id already have the wheels off and hubs apart anyway. pull the master cylinder and if the truck has a vaccum brake booster, change it. drop both tanks and clean em out. Change the plugs, wires, points,cap, condenser, voltage regulator, coil,belts,flush the radiator, change the air filter, rebuild the carb if needed, change the fuel pump weither it works or not, blow out the fuel line or lines with compressed air when you clean the gas tanks. check the valve covers and oil pan for leakage, change heater and radiator hoses, flush the radiator and check the heater core to make sure its not leaking. Change the fan belts and check the pulleys on the water pump, alternator and power steering pump for slack and or bearing noise. Drain the tranny and put new 90 wt in it, check the u-joints and carrier bearing if the drive shaft has one, check the grease in the rear end and check the bearing plates for leakage when your redoing the brakes on the rear end. by the time you do all that...........the truck will probably be reasonably dependable and reliable. Oh, might not be a bad idea to drive it to o'reily's and have them do a test on the charging system, its free and will tell you for sure if your alternator is up to snuff or not.:cool:

one more thing.............after you do all that stuff, a full lube/grease job would definately be a step up as long as your trucks been sitting.:cool:

Well Tim, I guess the current consensus is to just restore the sum biach right where it sits and forget the ride abck to the brother's place...

You will have no issues with 10 year old brake pads as long as they are not worn out or cracked.

The wheel cylinders are likely fine but could use a good stomping on the brakes several times and then pull drums to see if they're weeping...

If it's just going to be driven there then fixed up you don't need to do everything on the above list...

Plus if you are coming through vegas we can hang out and if you break down near here I am totally willing to help, you should find a lifs of forum members between here and there willing to help before you leave in case **** happens AAA sucks unless you live in the service area, and the other problem is out here in Nevada there are NO major cities between here and Bosie except maybe Salt Lake or Reno depending on how you are driving its lonely out here not much in the way of help... Also with the desert being as big as it is no cell coverage sometimes so cant even call Triple A

Anyways I would be worried about the tires mainly because of heat. The rest of it I would do plugs and wires i don't know what you are running for an ignition but always good to have spare points if you run points if you are running electric well then no worries there eh?

What kind motor you have in there an FE? I seem to remember My427Stang(Ross) having some problems after leaving a truck sitting for 12 years talk to him, alot of people suggest pulling valve covers and opening and closing the valves in case they are stuck so you don't ruin any pushrods..

Yeah so seek out My427stang he would have the best advice for you hes a real smart dude.
