im trying to replace a throwout bearing in a 1996 mustang GT coupe and im starting to run into some trouble. Im reading along in a haynes manual and it seems like there are a few things missing in the manual. The manual states that there are only 5 transmission bolts mounting the transmission to the engine. 2 on one side and three on the other. there now seems to be 7 total with not only the ones on the side but also 2 more on the top of the tranny. These two are very hard to get to and i was wondering if there is an easier way of getting these two off. I was thinking that it might be easy to take the crossmember off and drop the rear of the tranny a little bit so it would be easier to access those top 2 bolts.
Also, the manual never said anything about taking the starter off to remove the tranny. But it appears that you have to do that too, so i did. I was just wondering if i even had to do that.
Please, any advice to make this process of replacing a throwout bearing any easier would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

The starter does indeed need to come off to remove the tranny. As for the bellhousing bolts a combination of extensions and swivels will make them less painful to remove.

BTW are you installing a new clutch, PP and resurfacing the FW while you have it apart?

I think your a little confused ......................
Sounds like your talking about the bell housing.... not the tranny...
The bell housing is bolted to the block, the tranny is bolted to the bell housing with 4 to 5 bolts.. To just replace the T/O bareing you just need to remove the tranny not the bell as well..

Actually the t-45 transmissions in the 4.6 mustangs don't have a removeable bellhousing.

Did u figure it out yet, Don? If you still need some help give me a call.

Easy as hell to get the two top bolts.... Use a box end and do it from the top!

I've never ever seen the tranny pulled from the housing to to a throwout bearing change! I can't fathom how it's possible unless the tranny to bellhousing bolts are Out-side the bellhousing... I've never paid any attention to the placement to the bellhousing bolts on the 3 and 4 speed trannies...

What gives here Tim, could I have saved myself craploads of work over the years?

well we got it now.....all me and my bro did was take out the bottom five tranny bolts and dropped the rear enough to get a rachet with a few attachments and a swivel in there. The tranny dropped a enough inches to make it accessible. we will be putting it all back together tomorrow night and thanks to everyone for the tips.

May be my misstake.... I know on the older 3 , 4 spds the tranny (not automatic) bolts to the bell housing with 4 bolts thou the outside into the bell.. Maybe the newer ones are bolted from the inside of the bell... I was going off OLD BRAIN CELLS

Thats why I said OLD BRAIN... The new aluminum bells most likely go that way ... I was thinking the old school cast steal bells..

It may be as you say Tim, but I'd rather have my bolts going through the aluminum housing and INTO the steel rather than the other way around... I never really paid that mych attention to them... Never did a throwout bearing withought doing the whole clutch at the same time....

The T5(5.0) has a removable bell that has 4 external bolts that attach it to the tranny. By removing those 4 bolts the tranny can be removed and the bell, shift fork and TOB stay in place. It's much easier to do a clutch swap this way.

The Mod engine T45 tranny uses an integral bell and it cannot be removed.

BTW the tranny and bell are both aluminum.
