Changed the carb now the trans wont shift into third when its supposed to. On the freeway, it wouldn't shift until 75mph. While on the freeway it would occasionally shift into second then back into 3rd on its own. Does that S shaped bar going from carb linkage to trans have anything to do with this. 79 Merc Grand Marquis 351w/2v.

2 posibilities.

1. The kick down rod(the "S" shaped tube) is not adjusted right. Stuck in kickdown mode.

2. Vacuum hose to modulator is not hooked up correctly. It must be connected to maniford vacuum.

Is the transmission a 3spd. or AOD?? If it is AOD that is not a passing gear lever, but a throttle control valve linkage. It controls the pressure in the trans for shift points. On the early model ZF transmissions the adjustment was critical.

1979 Auto 3spd. If you need numbers to help me out ill crawl under there. It is the original trans rebuilt not long ago by previous owner, never had trouble with it till this carb change.

The kickdown is not manditory. Just be aware that it will not kick down to 2nd gear when you step on it at speed.

HAY KEN
The modulator is on the side of the tranny and looks almost like a vacuum pod for the dizzy.. only bigger.. it just needs a vacuum hose hooked up to it from the manifold (needs full manifold vacuum). The S shaped leaver from the carb is the kick down lever for passing gear as well as holding the car in the lower gears longer when at WOT.(wide open throtle).. It is not a nessary item but remember the tranny well not hold in lower gears when at WOT so you well need to manulely shift it for passing or when racing to hold a lower gear.

And the winner is......................Clevelandstyle!!!! Freddie you were close to it to. The kickdown tube was out of wack keeping the kickdown partially activated. I bent here tweeked there and now its working fine. THANKS ALL !!!
Plus, I learned something about transmissions; where the modulator is, and that I don't know squat about transmissions. Ill have to do some reading about it on my spare time.

Spare time. What is that?

No matter how complicated something is or seems, always start with the simple basics then work your way to the rocket science !!!
