Can anyone point me to a resource that would explain (to a novice) the main different caracteristics in older Ford transmissions?
The '62 curently has the original 352 with a Cruise-O-Matic. I have heard of a Ford-O Matic. Then there is the C-6, C-4 and C2? C-2? Is that real? This site has lots of info on the C-4.
The question is more about interchangeability than perfomance. I will hopefully be getting a '68 428 to replace the tired 352. There is nothing wrong with the Cruise-O. But can I just bolt the motor on? Will the C transmissions bolt to any FE? I know someone with a C-4 behind a 351. Then there are questions of mouting brackets, driveshaft lengths and all that. I know motors are cool and transmissions are boring but I promise to have some motor questions when I get the big FE on the stand. OK?

Thanks.

The FE engine family (332,352,360,390,410,42
was hooked up to the Cruisomatic early on and later the C6 and the FMX. The cruiso is a good trans, but does not have much in the way of aftermarket/high performance parts availability. Your 428 will bolt up to the cruiso, but I have heard that they don't last too well under abuse. That having been said, I have a rebuilt one behind by 352 and it is smooth and reliable for a cruiser.

Most 428 cars came with C6's and later some came with the FMX. The C6 is by far the most popular auto trans for the FE in a performance application. The trans bolt pattern for an FE is different than all other ford engines, a 351 trans won't work for you.

Thank you for the reply.
I know the original owner of this car and have been told that while the motor (352) has never had anything but a tune-up, the trans has been replaced twice. A weak link. If I can get the 428 I can get the C6 (freebee)with it. So now, I guess my question would be - Is this an eazy transplant? I can get a driveshaft made and I can bend cut and flare tubing but fabing linkage and trans mounts - well, how hard can it be?

Well, I can't help you from personal experience on a '62. I know that no '62 came with a C6, but that many of the guys here must have done the swap. I do know that the trans mount is not in the same location on the c6--I beleive it's further back. Keep in mind that the floor-shift C6 will have a different gear selector arm on the side of the trans than a trans from a collumn shift car. This has probably been solved by others as well. You will need to figure out the kick-down rod (for passing gear).

If you don't get a response here, try posting a question on the FE Forum--I can't say enough good stuff about that forum and you will undoubtably benefit from it when you dive into the 428. They are normally pretty responsive as long as it is somewhat FE-related and there are a lot of guys there with galaxies. http://www.network54.com/Hide/Forum/74182

As long as I'm giving advise--you should visit the galaxie club of america site and consider joining. You will meet lots of people who can help with questions, parts, etc.

Good luck and keep us up to date.
