What is the difference between the two? I have difference model C4's...1969, 1975 and 1978. What happens if I use the Mercon in the '75 or '78 instead of Type F?

The transmission would work fine for street and limited strip use.

For as performance wise, probably over time the transmission would start to slip the clutches and burn them specially if you are on the wide side of the tolerances. The bands might not hold as tightly either. The type F fluid has a higher coefficient of friction (less slipping) than mercon or dextron.

Wouldn't recommend putting the F in an AODE.,

Harsh/shifting, shudder, all kinds of not good qualities.
Now, if it's a race only setup, then by all means, go for it, but if not, I"d stick with the dextron.
