I like the EOIC method
Ehagust open
Intake closed
Just as the Exhagust opens adjust the intake valve on that cylender. Just as the Intake closes adjust the exhagust valve on that cylender.

I agree with pedal2themetal45 , that's the way I do it. Works great.

Tim is dead on with a zero. Been doing it that way for years. Easier than trying to do it by the firing order for sure.

exhaust valve will be the one that lines up above the exhaust ports (where the headers go)

I would recommend a good book like Tom Monroe's "How to Rebuild your small block Ford"..It's got excellent info on how to rebuild and tune your engine.It shows pictures of how to set your valves and which valves are which..Even when your an old pro its great to refer back to the 'greasy" pages to find bolt torques etc
