I have been looking to no avail for a third pedal assembly that will work on my 66 2d hardtop for an auto to manual swap. I'm a fabricator/welder by trade and could make something work, but hate to re invent the wheel if possibly someone out there might have one that would sell. I'm open to the whole setup as well, trans , bell, flywheel, etc. I'm aware of American Powertrain kit for FE's , but they don't offer pedals for a 66. They also only offer hydraulic t.o bearing setup as well, and I'm not a fan of that unless I have to. Any pointers in the right direction would be greatly appreciated!

Hello BT66,

The manual pedal assembly is the same for 1965 to 1968 Ford full size models (Custom, galaxie 500, LTD, XL). I doubt there are many LTD's and XL's with a manual transmission but there were plenty of Customs and galaxie 500's with manual 3 speed on the column. That being said why not try places like Desert Valley Auto Parts or CTC Auto Ranch. I am sure there are some other old car junkyards in the Midwest you could research.

I even had a complete pedal assembly for a '66 galaxie 500 3 speed manual parts car that no one wanted at the time and it went with a pile of other non needed parts to the dump awhile back as all our 66's and 68's are automatics.

Good luck with your search.

Cheers

Hello Desert XL,

Thank you for the info . As usual, I'm a day late and a dollar short . Hopefully someone else who has an assembly that will work will see this and not dump them .I'll research the wrecking yards in you're area, as around here on the east coast (N.C) I'm coming up snake eyes.

Thanks Again!

Go over to the Ford FE engine forum.
There are a couple of members there that have those pedal assembly’s for sale.

Thanks very much galaxiex! I put in a feeler and have my fingers crossed.

Saw you over on the FE forum. Between there and here, we should be able to help you track down the parts. I think a guy on that thread you posted in actually has extra pedal sets.

What transmission are you going with? I assume you have an FE in there.

I currently have just a few "extra" parts that I gathered for my manual swap:

Frame-side z-bar bracket ("outer bracket"). The z-bar that came with that bracket is unfortunately wrong for a Galaxie, so it would be of no use to you.

The entire pedal hanging bracket itself but if you have a auto in the car now, your existing bracket will work. This came with one of the pedal kits I bought a while ago and is A LOT of work to swap out.

A truck bell-housing, which could work but you need a longer input shaft on a toploader since it's about 3/4" longer than a car bellhousing. I was going to go this route until I found a Galaxie bell-housing on ebay last year.

A transmission hump for a console car. I have bench seats, so this one would look weird in mine (higher off the floor than the bench seat shifter hump. Not sure if I'm going to try to modify this and use it, but as a fabricator you may be able to finagle it to your needs.

Hello, Dakar09,

First off, thank you for offering up some spare parts. It sounds like you have some good parts to work with. Mine is a 390/C6 auto currently. I'd like to find pedals ,and I'd be in the game. I plan to mod pedal for cable set-up using a QuickTime bell and go with a faceplated tremec. BUT, if I could find factory parts, linkage and all fairly easy, I'd go with a top loader. I haven't chose my rear gear ratio yet so I'm open. I'll keep that bracket in mind if some other parts come available. I have a bench seat as well, and my understanding, only slight tunnel mods are needed with a top loader. Small cut in, and weld profile patch in will keep factory look with a bench.

I think there is a Tremec conversion thread on this website along with someone who did a cable conversion for their clutch linkage. The tricky part is the factory clutch pedal is a "push" type mechanism, where it actuates the Z-bar, which then pushes on the clutch fork. That said, I don't know how the QuickTime bell-housing and clutch fork functions.

Racetuning.com makes a hydraulic conversion kit for toploaders, but no idea how this fits or functions. I just recently discovered this kit by accident after ordering a clutch fork from them.

The trans hump for the bench seat is a much lower profile piece than the console hump I have. Here is a pic of the one we actually need. Definitely a small intrusion into the trans tunnel (I need one of these or have to fabricate something)...

Sounds like you have the skills to fabricate the appropriate hump.

Sounds like you have the skills to fabricate the appropriate hump.

If you have access to a welder, and a way to cut it ( preferably cutting wheel on a grinder), I wouldn't use either one unless I had the correct one. I agree the big hump would look like a dump truck shifter..lol.
If you get your trans in position fore and aft, just mark the profile you need to make it clear coming up. Make 3 cuts , and bend metal up on the side you left uncut. Raise your trans up in position, and just fill gaps with metal you cut out to fit. You can do it.

Hadn't thought of approaching it that way! I appreciate the advice. I was going to just cut the entire section out and then either find a bench seat hump (more likely I'd find diamonds in my backyard) or try to fab something out of metal and/or fiberglass.

The hump is just the room for the shifter mechanism and long Galaxie tail shaft. Other than factory Ford shifter I believe a model specific Hurst syncro lock might fit. One of those kits is probably harder to find than the hump. I thought at one time someone was making fiberglass reproductions of the hump.

Yeah, I know it's just to clear the shifter mechanism, and you definitely need to give it room under there. I've done a trans swap in a Volvo race build before and didn't mind cutting out a chunk of the tunnel for it to clear, but don't want to do this in the Galaxie!

I haven't found any fiberglass versions. One of the guys on the FE forum (cliffrod) was working on a fabbed piece but got sidelined. David Kee toploaders makes a repro hurst shifter for the Galaxie, and it seems to look very similar to the stock Ford part, maybe just a little bit lower profile. I'm aiming for the most minimal intrusion into the trans tunnel, but some cutting definitely needs to be done.

I used a hurst 3speed floor shift conversion. It fits under the stock floor boards of a 1970 galaxie and a 65. Only need a hole for the stick to go thru. So a hump is not needed.
may want to try that route.

The shifter in this kit is on the cheap side. Worked fine when I was 18. Not sure if my more refined tastes would still like it.
On my 65 I will use this master shift shifter which is effectively a competition plus in 3 speed form. I’m going to use the Indy mounts from the conversion kits since for some reason the master shifter does not come with mounting hardware.
