Every now and then my engine just shuts off by itself. I can immediately crank it back up and go. It only does this when it is at an idle. I'm bumfustered as to what this might be.

I'm concerned that it is going to go from an intermittent to permanent condition on me somewhere. This truck also has a Duraspark 2? I think. I've replaced that thing twice since I got the truck running.

I like my Duraspark 2 when it is working and I don't want to cut up the factory harnesses that plug in and out of the thing. I'm going to pull and clean all my connectors. It hasn't done this lately after I posted this but I don't think it has just gone away. It could be the coil too. The thing that is baffling is that after it shuts off it will immediately crank again so it makes diagnosing the problem a bit difficult. I think I'll even check my plug wire to the coil and the coil connections. Seems like it must be something simple.

Its the stock Duraspark 2 module with the duraspark wide cap distributor. Both are remanufactured parts. I got better quality ones this go around after the other Duraspark module croaked on me. The epoxy broke loose from the housing on the thing.

My truck finally quit permanently today and left me walking home. It looks like it is the battery but it seems weird for a battery to do this. It must have been on the verge before and was dropping below what the minimum voltage for the Duraspark was so it would temporarily shut off the engine? Can you have a dead short inside a car battery?

I know the battery is weak so we tried to jump start me. The solenoid would click but it wouldn't crank. I couldn't get enough juice to the starter. I should have thought to try and bypass my battery but I couldn't hold the person there long enough to see if it would crank that way.

They can get small internal shorts as they break-down. Heavy load (starting) can melt-back some of these shorts and it works again. Too many and you're stuck. Jumping helps, but the shorts prevent the voltage and amperage from rising enough to spin the starter. In-fact, under that condition, you might get it cranking by removing the old battery from the circuit (removing the short) and run on alternator. That is not a suggested action, just outlining the effect of the internal short. Nice to find the 'ghost' in the system so you can move on, eh?

I hope this was the same problem regarding the engine just shutting off and then cranking right back up but I'll need to drive it a while to make sure.

That battery was only a year and a half old. They gave me a half price on a new one.
