What would be the strongest pushrod small block for the money? 69 351W? Something that will survive 500 rear wheel HP on the street? A dart block is way to expensive.

The strongest, you have your answer. It is my understanding, however, that most any 351W will survive the 500 rwhp level that you indicated, unless you are spinning it past 8000 rpm, which you shouldn't need to do.

I believe that's correct Rich. From what I've seen and read, the 69-70 short deck blocks, and the 71-74 taller deck blocks will all hold as much as 600-650hp, below 8000rpm.

Pretty substantial stuff.

I wouldn't say there's anything wrong with it. Did you mean 69 or 79? If 69, they're very strong, just keep in mind the slightly shorter deck. If 79, it's still a 550rwhp+ block (some say more), so don't throw it away for sure!

All the information that I have from Ford says the 351 Windsor block was 9.503" deck height from 1969 to 1985. My '75 block has a 9.493" deck height after milling .010 off to true it up. There is a stronger "truck" connecting rod that is recommended for high performance street use because it is spot faced where the rod bolts lock to the rod and is heavier with a bit of a shoulder at the shoulder of the rod. All the blocks in the year range above are the same block and strength.
