Yes, it is a direct swap, small block to small block.
'd ditch the FMX myself, unless it's a good trans, and go the c4/c6 route, or even an AOD if you want overdrive {of course, these are a pain to properly set up}.
my 2 cents
make sure the flexplate teeth match each other. if the fmx is using a 164 tooth and you try to put it behind the 302 with a 157 tooth, there might be a small problem.
Gotcha... It's not my car, just one I may be doing a partial restoration on for a customer, and his tranny isn't bad yes but I offered him my FMX for $300, if he ever needed it....
Looks like I won't need to sell it to him afterall... I might have the job of restoring a '71 Montego MX in about a week.... I will have to take it to my dad's in Seattle to do the work but it will be worth the expence just seeing a nicer than nice '71 on the road again! I don't see many around... It's a 302 2V original bench seat split back car and has been mod'd with an Edel 289 performer intake and model 1406 Weber/Brock carburetor 600cfm Elec choke. I tuned it up yesterday for the people who own it and it nicely brings the front end up about 12" when the wheels aren't spinning....
