Another auto enthusiast who has good intentions and loves his car but is completely full of dog poo?? I am a hardcore racer, builder (not as talented as many) with a huge passion for Engineering, fabrication, experimenting and building motors so when it comes to me personally tackling something unfamiliar I research, research, research and learn before I stick my head under water. Then there are the guys who sit there and brag to me endlessly about how their "3/4 cam" inside of their "bored out" 350 makes 500 hp. Or how their car is too fast for the track so they dont race it. Im not just picking on the Chevy guys cause I have met many Ford guys that were just as bad. The other day I met a guy who owns a T-bucket that has a 289/c4 and he went on to tell me its the fastest one in his class 89mph doesnt know the ET because ET is not important, of course it has a "race cam" and "race heads" he doesnt know the specs on the cam or the brand of aftermarket heads. It dynoed at 650hp and hauls wheelies down the street. Non of this is made up, this is the kind of stuff I get into everytime I open my mouth and ask about someones car
. I am a polite and respectful young fellow but what the heck is a man to do to set these guys reasonably straight without insulting? What do you guys do/say??????????

The trick is .. to go around the corner or turn your head when you are about to laugh out loud or can't hold back a grin.

Sooner or later - they'll learn.

The smarter ones will appreciate that you didn't call them an idiot to their face.

Stop being so nice... it fuels them. call their bluff every time so they will have to put up or shut up-. I told a guy

if you win i pay everything " food, fuel, entry fee's, fuel to and from the track at 50 miles each way..... he wouldn't race his 350 fireburd against a 351c ranchero. but he still said that his was faster-

I ran into an old friend from high school the other day.....

Long story short shes got a 5.0 Mustang with a trick flow intake, headers, and an MSD setup. I asked her if she ever took it to the track. Her responce was one for the record books.

"No, not yet. It does 7s now, but I want it faster before we go to the track....."

I politely told her I'll be going to the races this spring with my Bronco, and shes more than welcome to come. I figure nothing could shut her up faster than whoopin her ass in the 1/4 in a 5000 lb 4x4

It reminds me of being back in high school. Everybody says their car can do this or that and it's got this part and it makes this much power blah blah blah. I got so sick and tired of hearing about it. The real guys would actually take their cars to the track and run 'em and those were the guys who I listened to back then. Sometimes when you would listen to the bench racers, you think your head would explode because you would want to call them on their BS, but it was just easier to let them make fools of themselves.

I'm 45. I've heard the ole "it's got a 3/4 cam in it" statement for so long that I just can't take it anymore. If someone says that to me, my response is " You know, if you had put the whole thing in there it would probably run better". I get responses from the "F" word to "HUH? I guess I'm just not nice anymore.

I alway's tell those idiots that they forgot the last 1/4 of the cam and they are loosing about 100 HP due to it.

I don't like liars and usually call them out on it, because humility changes people...

Maybe next time they wont be so friggin mouthy about it...

You say "Wow, gee, all I got is a little 289/302, you wanna go race so I can see how much faster your car is?" Then take them to a nice deserted stretch of road and give 'em a good look at your tail lights.

Sometimes....you just got to play along. If some of these people wanted to know something, they could. There will just be one of the "my grandmother had a Mustang with a 283" types at about every show. I get them a lot at big events at the track because we're usually parked up front near the stands. I just smile and nod, gently correct any specific information they might say about the configuration of our cars. A personal favorite is to show someone the 351C and get the response "big block".

Now, if they pro-offer that theirs is rather fast, I ask for a time slip. If it's a younger type and/or ricer and I know their ride to be all bling and no zing - I offer them a ride. Even a slowazz 12 second car like mine can be harry scary when you're used to a 15 second ride.

One night we were in the pits at Texas Raceway playing with the timing on the King's mustang and this very nice, affable guy comes over to offer his advice. The King's car has World 200 "Roush" heads on it, so this guy says, "I bet if you called the Roush factory they can tell you where to set the timing for maximum performance". We just smiled and said we like to figure things out for ourselves. At least he wasn't trying to tell us how fast his 1989 F-150 was on any other night but this one.

What do I do when somebody tells me about their "hot rod" and obviously doesn't know sh*t from Shinola? Smile, nod and go on. If it makes them happy to talk about their 3/4 race cam (flathead days stuff), their HUGE Fuelie heads, 15-1 compression ,600 hp. and all the rest, who am I to bust their bubble? Life is too short to get upset about stuff like this.

BTW, you don't run into this sort of bragging with circle track guys. They're generally trying to tell you what a "box' their car and motor is so hopefully you'll give 'em a bit of extra room on the track so they can blow your doors off....

Thank you for the responses and although I hate to admit it but I have too much of a soft spot for older guys who are ignorant to engine fundamentals and I generally dont like to kick dirt in peoples faces when they have good intentions, Except for times when my reputation is on the line and someone is bashing me I GET POed. Like the time I had finished building a 302 for my '68 mustang that had a victor jr intake, and 240 deg dur @ .050" cam and a C4 trans, a certain relative of mine took it for a drive letting the trans shift on its own at 3500 rpm, he came back a wouldnt shut up about how slow it was and his junkyard 350 would walk all over it. Needless to say that motor wouldnt even turn on until 4000 rpm and would pull very nice to 7000rpm. With 3.00 gears that car ran a mid 13sec 1/4.

I once told a friend of mine that I was sick and tired of the bullshit coming out of his mouth.
It soon stopped!

I didn't grow up around many people who knew much about cars. There was the occasional guy at school who said his Monte Carlo had 320 HP because it was supercharged and the dealer said so.

I said he should go see the dealer and get his money back.

I didn't talk about how fast my car was unless someone asked. I'd talk about what I had done to it and how I had done what, but nothing about performance. If they asked "how fast is it" I'd usually say "fast enough" and that was enough for them, but if not, I said, "there are much faster factory cars out there. None of them cost less than mine."

It's a trick really. I go around and general chit chat to feel these guys out at car shows. You see, I'm purposely hunting for the ones I can glean wisdom from. You can usually get if they are the real deal within about 5 min of conversation. If the guy is all $$ and no knowlege, it will start showing itself. In those cases I say "wow, that's cool" to whatever it was he said, look in another direction and start gettng interested in another car. I dont appear rude, I dont appear uninterested, I just slowly fade away. The shows are full of guys who paid others to restore them, so you just gotta weed them out.
Now, if I find that "dinosaur" that has been wrenching for 40 years or so, you make a friend if you can. Be honest about your knowlege and ability and 9 times out of ten you will gain his respect and will get a good contact out of it. That my point of view. If I get unfortunate enough to meet the guy with a brand new mustang GT that tells me about how his car will go 200 MPH and will beat any vette he sees, I just swallow it then and throw up later.
Dealers are a whole different story. They lie. They don't know the product they are selling most of the time. That is wrong and I call them on it. I dont care what a stink it causes. In fact, I think its fun to call them on thier bullshit.

I guess I've heard too much for too long. I usually either make a 'wtf face', and walk away.....rather quickly.
What's even cooler (if/when I bring the stang to little car shows), (not to be judged, because they rarely have a modified/race car only class), but just to hang out, and listen to the stupidity.
I walk around, or sit a row back (just within listening room), and listen to ALL the blithering idiots ridicule/nitpick my car to pieces, swearing they had one faster/quicker/made more hp, did better wheelies, everything you could imagine. When it REALLY gets stupid (to the point it pisses me off about something), I'll usually wander up behind them and call them out on it.

I just wish stupidity and ineptitude were painful.............

Easy, say lets race out on the old road. Then show a C note and say, Money talks, BS walks. Put up or shut up. I think I've heard about all of them, 3/4 cam, muffler bearings, low drag high speed bearings, chrome always is good for 5 more mph. Most of the fools talk in very general terms and wouldn't know a camshaft it you put it where the sun don't shine. Or you could just say, excuse me while I laugh and puke.
It's kind of like going to war, there's those that talk about it, and then those that been there.

Come on guys ... what fun is there in picking on the lame, lazy and crazy?

A man is as much known by his choice of enemies as by his collection of friends. Don't pick the "low hanging" fruit ... the really juciy bits are higher on the tree.
