The earliest ones (69-70) have a 9.48" deck height, which is a little shorter than the later ones. The later ones are 9.5" There's 0.020" difference.

Most pistons are made to work with either block, and will be pretty far down in the hole on newer blocks. A buddy built a 427 stroker out of a 79' block and the pistons were 0.030" below deck at TDC. We took the block to the machine shop to have 0.030" cut off.

Good Luck!

Mike's numbers are all right on. As for the Victor intake, the .020" different won't be enough to matter.
On the deck height, my experience with a 393 and KB pistons verified what KB says about their 351W products; they are designed for the 9.500" deck and will be above deck on the 9.480". We shaved the quenches on the pistons .015" to achieve zero deck.

do the pistons have to be at zero deck, and do they make pistons that will work with the 9.480 block without any modification
let me know thanks a lot
