A few days ago I was gifted a 1962 Mercury Monterey from my father. It is a nice first project car, and I'm excited call the shots on this one. After deep diving into the internet (mercurystuff.com) I have found a hole in there information. 1962 Mercury Monterey from the Canadian plant in Ontario. There is tons of info on 1961 and 63, but missing for 62. My first question. Is there a proper vin to these cars and where? ( I know about the plate in between the drivers door and the body). Second is there anyone who can tell me where exactly the serial number is on the block of the engine? I'm not about to rip it apart if I don't have to.
Also any and all advise on how to restore this car to her original glory would be amazing and much appreciated.

I would like to welcome you even if I don't have an answer for your question. I used to have a 2-door 62 Monsterey.

Love the old Mercs. best of luck

check above the starter.
Engine is an FE hydraulic lifter. FE engines from the outside look a like except for the 427 side oiler
which has an oil galley running down the side of the engine.
352, 390, 410, almost all the blocks have a 352 stamping on them, which means nothing.
as far as displacement is concerned

To find the casting numbers you must either remove the starter or use a small scope style camera to look behind it.
The 62 build was no different from 61-63, the decoders should tell you exactly what you need forr the 63 with your numbers.

The Engine as stated above will have 352 cast into the bloks below the drivers head. It covers all FE blocks from 331 CI to 428 CI, with the exception of the 501 mirror blocks used in trucks from 74 on up.

The VIN number is stamped into the cowl above your heater hose near the passenger hood hinge.

And heres some decent infor for your 62
