A oil psi drop as the car warms up? When you first start the car cold oil psi gauge reads 40 as it warms up 15 mins or so its down to 30. take it out on the street it stays around 20 at a stop at light were its idling it reads less then 5 psi, then when you take off back to around 20.

Isnt that really low?
what would cause this?

The engine was rebuilt 3000 miles ago , no oil leaks, no smoke, no loss of power.

Any thoughts?
thanks

The very first thing I would do is verify the readings with a second independent gauge just so you have a valid starting point.

Engine oil normally thins as it warms up, so a drop in oil pressure from cold start to fully warm is completely normal. However, the warm oil pressure you have is indeed too low, you should be at LEAST 15psi hot idle and 35psi hot cruise... lower than that indicates excessive wear in the bearings, bad oil pump, or could be as simple as too low of viscosity oil. Definitely double check the pressure readings with a mechanical pressure gauge, and if you see the same thing, you'll need to start troubleshooting. What oil are you running?

cut the oil filter open but not with a hacksaw, see if the bearing are in the filter.

Mine used to do it badly because of a small piece of Teflon got in the gauge port.
Now it starts at 60 and drops to 35 at idle and at 180 dg.
